What actually matters for torrenting

Is torrenting with a VPN legal?
Using a VPN is legal in most countries, and torrenting itself is just a file-sharing protocol — Linux distributions and many games distribute legally over BitTorrent. But a VPN does not make copyright infringement legal: downloading or sharing copyrighted material without permission is illegal in most jurisdictions. Only torrent content you have the rights to.
Do I need port forwarding?
