Do I Need a VPN? An Honest Decision Guide

We run a VPN-focused site, so here's the least self-serving thing we can say: many people don't need a VPN. Whether you do depends on one question — your threat model: who are you trying to keep your activity hidden from?
A VPN hides your traffic from your ISP and your local network, and hides your IP from the sites you visit. If neither of those observers concerns you, a VPN buys you very little. Let's get specific.
You probably benefit from a VPN if…
- You use networks you don't trust. Hotel, airport, café, or conference Wi-Fi run by strangers. A VPN keeps local snoopers from seeing your browsing metadata. The EFF's rule of thumb: if you don't know who runs the network, and you have a VPN you trust, use it (EFF).
- You don't want your ISP building a profile on you. Your ISP can see every domain you visit and when. Some ISPs sell or share this data; in some countries they're legally required to log it. A VPN moves that visibility from your ISP to the VPN provider (EFF).
- You travel or live where content is restricted. VPNs can circumvent network-level censorship — school networks, workplaces, or countries that block services (EFF).
- You need a different apparent location. Streaming libraries, sports blackouts, or accessing services from abroad — the classic VPN use case. See best VPN for streaming.

You probably don't need a VPN if…
- You mostly browse at home on trusted Wi-Fi. The EFF notes that VPNs "aren't necessary to protect against most security threats on public Wi-Fi" anymore, because the majority of web traffic is encrypted with HTTPS — which already protects the content of what you do (EFF).
- Your concern is "hackers stealing my passwords." HTTPS already encrypts your logins end-to-end. A VPN adds nothing against phishing, which is how credentials are actually stolen (Norton).
- You want to stop ads or tracking. A VPN doesn't block cookies, fingerprinting, or tracking pixels. Logged into Google? Google knows it's you, VPN or not. Ad-blockers and tracker blockers address this; VPNs don't (TechRadar, EFF).
- You want anonymity. A VPN is not an anonymity tool. It shifts trust from your ISP to the provider — and "no logs" is a promise, not a proof (EFF).
The decision checklist
Answer these honestly:
- Who am I hiding from? If the answer is "my ISP" or "this sketchy hotel network" — a VPN helps. If it's "Google" or "Facebook" — it doesn't.
- Do I use untrusted networks regularly? Frequent traveler or remote worker on random Wi-Fi: strong case. Homebody on home fiber: weak case.
- Do I need another country's IP? Streaming, travel, or geo-restricted services: a VPN is the standard tool.
- Am I okay shifting trust to a VPN company? A VPN provider sees what your ISP used to see. Pick one with independent audits and a track record — and understand it's still trust, not magic.

If you do get one: the non-negotiables
- Kill switch on. Blocks all traffic if the VPN drops — usually off by default. See kill switch explained.
- Modern protocol. WireGuard or OpenVPN; skip anything offering only PPTP.
- Verify it works. Run the 5-minute checklist — a leaking VPN is worse than none.
- Check the renewal price. Promo pricing roughly triples at renewal on some providers. The first-term price is not the price.
